Adjacent segment disease

Adjacent segment disease occurs when spinal levels next to a previous fusion begin to wear out faster. The extra stress placed on nearby segments can lead to degeneration or instability. Patients may develop new pain or nerve symptoms years after surgery. It is a known long-term risk of spinal fusion procedures. Treatment may involve additional surgery in some cases.
