Lumbar radiculopathy (sciatica)

Lumbar radiculopathy, commonly known as sciatica, occurs when a nerve in the lower back is compressed or irritated. This causes pain that travels down the buttock and leg. Patients may also feel numbness, tingling, or weakness. It is often caused by a herniated disc or spinal stenosis. Most cases improve with conservative treatment, though some require surgery.
